Project Officer (Wildland Fire Management)
We are seeking a motivated and dynamic individual with strong project coordination skills and a passion for community engagement and biodiversity conservation. As the Project Officer, you will help strengthen fire management and build community resilience within the Maya Forest Corridor.
Job Overview:
The Project Officer will be responsible for implementing a three-year project entitled “Enhancing Community Resilience through Fire Management in Central Belize.” This project is being led by TBZTEC with funding provided through the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) from the Adaptation Fund (AF). The Project Officer will ensure successful delivery of project outcomes and activities related to community engagement, wildland fire management, and technical project management.
Key Responsibilities
Community Outreach
- Establish continuous consultations and dialogue with target communities in the Maya Forest Corridor regarding perceptions, uses, and risks of fire
- Organize and co-facilitate meetings, workshops, and informational sessions with target communities to improve community participation in fire management issues affecting the landscape
- Conduct comprehensive educational campaigns within target communities about fire safety and responsible burning practices with an emphasis on schools
Wildland Fire Management
- Actively participate in fire management capacity building for target communities in the Maya Forest Corridor
- Support the coordination of trainings and workshops to enhance fire management capacity for target communities in the Maya Forest Corridor
- Assist in the procurement and strategic distribution of fire management tools and gear
- Support the establishment of project infrastructure that promote community climate resilience
- Assist in the coordination of trainings, workshops and procurement of tools to enhance capacity in fire ecology monitoring capacity target communities in the Maya Forest Corridor
Project Management
- Support the fulfillment of project goals, targets, and outcomes
- Support the development of agendas, inventories, work plans, purchase orders, sub-contracts, and project policy, safety and compliance documents
- Ensure timely and efficient execution of project activities in order to fulfill project goals and deadlines
- Support the fulfillment of project reporting requirements and grant agreement compliance including effective documentation, financial reports, and technical project updates
Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Biology, Project Management, or related fields.
- An Associate’s Degree with proven, relevant experience may be considered
- Possession of a valid Class A driver’s license
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
- Effective public speaking and facilitation skills
- Ability to navigate and foster professional relationships with diverse stakeholders (e.g. community members, youth, women, village councils, NGOs, and government agencies)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Self-starter with initiative; able to organize, plan, and work productively with minimal supervision
- Ability to occasionally undertake field work in challenging conditions (e.g. during wildfire response)
- Competency in utilizing software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Canva (or equivalent) for creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, visual aids, and basic graphic design
- Previous, proven experience in project management and execution
- Must be a Belizean Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Flexible availability, including weekends and public holidays as required by the project activities
- Ability to work with GIS and related mapping software is an asset

- Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience

Zookeeper
Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in the world of wildlife conservation? We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate individual to join our Animal Care and Management Department as a Zookeeper!
Job Overview:
Zookeepers play a vital role in the daily husbandry care of native Belizean wildlife in a zoological setting. Responsibilities will include providing appropriate diets, maintaining clean and healthy animal habitats, administering medication and special care as directed, and ensuring the overall well-being of our animal residents.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Husbandry
- Prepare and distribute appropriate diets for animals based on their nutritional needs as directed.
- Ensure all animals have access to fresh drinking water of suitable quality, maintaining water cleanliness for aquatic and semi-aquatic species.
- Clean animal habitats regularly to maintain a healthy environment and ensure public display standards are met.
- Assist in the administration of medication and provide special care as instructed by the General Curator.
- Conduct familiarization and research to gain knowledge of the natural history, nutritional requirements, health, hygiene, behavior, and social groupings of each animal species.
- Implement environmental and behavioral enrichment strategies to promote mental and physical stimulation for animals.
- Assist in the capture and examination of escaped animals or those requiring veterinary attention.
- Provide care and rearing support for orphaned animals, including 24-hour care shifts when needed.
Behavioral Observation and Reporting
- Conduct daily behavioral observations of animals to identify any notable changes or concerns regarding their health and welfare.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, logs, and records of animal care activities, including training and enrichment programs.
- Report any significant findings or concerns to your immediate Supervisor promptly.
Habitat Maintenance
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of animal habitats through regular scrubbing, disinfection, sweeping, and removal of waste.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks as needed to ensure the safety and functionality of animal habitats to enhance the aesthetics of habitats by pruning trees, adding natural perches for enrichment, weeding plants, and incorporating leaf litter to simulate natural environments.
- Collaborate with the maintenance team to address any structural or environmental issues.
Volunteers and Visitor Interactions
- Work with local and international volunteers and externs, providing guidance, training, and mentorship.
- Interact with Zoo visitors in a friendly and informative manner to enrich their Zoo experience.
- Assist with day tours and zookeeper talks – sharing knowledge about resident animals and their habitat.
- Assist with animal experiences while adhering to safety protocols and educational objectives.
Requirements:
- Passion for wildlife: Demonstrate a genuine love for wildlife and a commitment to conservation efforts.
- Education background: Possess a minimum of a high school diploma, preferably in Biology or Integrated Science.
- Language proficiency: Exhibit a strong command of the English language for effective communication within our team.
- Collaborative spirit: Work seamlessly as part of a team dedicated to the well-being of our resident ambassador animals.
- Flexibility is key: Embrace a dynamic schedule that includes flexible hours and occasional work on public holidays.
- Desirable assets: Hold a valid driver’s license, bilingual proficiency, and prior experience in animal husbandry.
