Free from school and ready to embark on their summer vacation, 28 students from around Belize attended this year’s Conservation Summer Camp at the Tropical Education Center (July 4th -8th 2005). Like in past years, these students came with the expectation of fun and adventure. Students took night and day tours of the zoo, went canoeing, hiked an impressive 4 km trail in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as many other activities around the TEC. But despite many of the same adventures, a notable change has occurred with this year’s summer camp. This year, an emphasis was also put on thinking critically about conservation and the problems facing natural resources in Belize. Students had the privilege of learning about the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), a leader in funding and monitoring conservation projects around Belize. Other subjects included watersheds, ecosystems of Belize, current zoo conservation projects, and the opportunity to take an active part in natural resource negotiation. All this was geared towards preparing their minds for conservation and giving them practical ways to take action.
