Philadelphia Father's Day

Frankie the JaguarA first time proud Dad is Frankie the Jaguar, originally from Frank's Eddy village on the Western Highway , and now a happy resident at The Philadelphia Zoo. Frankie, with his Philadelphia Zoo exotic new name, "Jutai", has an inspiring story. Left as a cub in the forests bordering the community of Frank's Eddy, it was believed that his mother was shot for preying upon cattle in the area. Less than one year old, Frankie was brought to the Zoo in a sack. Immediately after letting the cat out of the bag, TBZ officials begin giving Frankie tender loving care.

Then, over 100 children along with teachers and parents, joined together to bring birthday wishes to April. First, the "Mountain Cow Song" was sung by the La Democracia Pre-school Gibnuts.

Junior Buddy: A Telemedia Star!

Junior Buddy: A Telemedia StarAll of us at The Belize Zoo are so happy about the Belize Telemedia Limited’s (BTL) 2011 Telephone Directory. Why, you ask? Because, the cover is graced by our very own Jaguar Ambassador, Junior Buddy! This eye-catching photo was taken by Telemedia’s senior graphic representative, Mr. Stephen Yarwood. So exciting! With appropriate ceremony and applause, the new Telemedia Telephone Directory was officially unveiled at the Zoo on Friday, the 1st of April.

Blue-Crowned Motmot

Such a beautiful and full-of-character bird we will soon display at the Zoo! They are five in our new Blue-crowned Motmot club, and how they came to the Zoo is a must-share story. Recent, harsh fires proved to be devastating to so much of our native plants and animals. People suffered, too, from these, sadly, often human-set infernos. And many animals could not escape the fury of the constant flames, smoke and the lack of food and water resources.

Wow, oh wow! It's a Mountain Cow

Bath time for Navidad and baby Marchismo2011 was truly a "baby boom" year for the TBZ. It seemed that everyone, from crocs to deer to mottled owls, was bringing new life into this world. The landmark birth this year, however, happened on March 15th. Zoo staff had been crossing their fingers for months before, ever since Veterinarian Dr George Kolias, of Cornell University in New York, had confirmed our 5 year old Tapir "Navidad" to indeed be with calf! So, on this wonderful day, Navidad added a new member to the TBZ Tapir squad, and the first Tapir ever born at the Zoo, "Marchismo"!
