Mountain Cow Mania in Belize

As conservationists around the world prepared celebrate the 4 existing species of tapirs for World Tapir Day, April 27th marked another milestone in The Belize Zoo’s rich history, as the Zoo went into “tapir-bration” mode for the first ever National Tapir Day. TBZ Environmental Educator Jamal Andrewin envisioned a government supported day to celebrate our national animal, the Central American Tapir in Belize. The vision was put down in a proposal letter , by TBZ and mailed off to our decision makers, and got a big “thumbs up” from the office of the Prime Minister, as well as support from over a dozen organizations across the country.

Partners and Friends: A Trip to BioUniverZoo, Chetumal

Belize Zoo and BioUniverZoo officials in Chetumal Recently, officials from The Belize Zoo were warmly welcomed to BioUniverZoo, located just across our northern border, in Chetumal, Mexico. Zoo Director Lesley Paola Martinez Ramirez, joined by some of her staff, provided a royal tour of their zoo. So impressive!! Just like The Belize Zoo, BioUniverZoo features animals only native to the area, and strongly stresses the vital need to preserve them for the future.

Science Fairs and Concert Gigs

Recent days have seen important messages shared with many, coming straight from the heart of The Belize Zoo. Environmental Educator, Jamal Andrewin, spent a day in March at the grand science fair event at Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio, Cayo. Besides showing an attractive display of his work involving the rare harpy eagle, Jamal also had a large, colourful poster showing the Central Belize Biological Corridor, and some of the animals who call this important area their home.

Party Time with Junior Buddy the Jaguar

What a tremendous day at The Belize Zoo! Over 100 children celebrated Junior Buddy’s 5th birthday, and having fun was clearly the call on this special morning. How does jaguar “Junior Buddy” party hearty? First, to the delight of the children watching, “Justice” the Jaguar, our very own Environmental Educator, Jamal Andrewin, dressed up as a mighty big cat, and sprayed Obsession Cologne on Junior’s climbing log.

Happy Holidays from The Belize Zoo!

This year, Christmas was ever so special at the Zoo. Now, just over one year after we were devastated by Hurricane Richard, our “new look” has drawn nothing but compliments from visitors. School group visitation has increased, and we can readily see that the messages the Zoo puts forth about protecting the nation’s natural resources, is having a positive effect.
