Welcome to the Zoo, little Runt!

There are often times in nature when runts of litters are abandoned and left to die.  Why?   It takes time and energy to raise young.  If a Mama realizes that a newborn is not a fit offspring, she chooses, instead, to dedicate time and energy to the remaining stronger youngsters.   Our newly-acquired Keel-billed toucan, “Runt” is an example of this type of occurrence in nature.

Our Central Wildlife Corridor Gets Attention!

Thousands of people are admiring the beautiful billboard located along the Western Highway which broadcasts the Wildlife Corridor of Central Belize.   The stunning photo of the margay cat, a resident of these important lands, was taken by photographer Carol Farneti-Foster.  Carol, along with her photo assistant at times, niece Aleacia Jensen, kindly agreed to be a part of this photograph. Both are  big fans of the Corridor concept and of course, they  love one of the special places found within the Wildlife Corridor, The Belize Zoo!

Coming Soon: Our National Bird!

Yes!  Soon we will proudly have on display, the Keel-billed toucan, our colourful and charismatic National Bird.    Not long ago, a farmer in the Cayo District contacted us and pleaded for rescue assistance.  Three baby keel- billed toucans had been orphaned when their nesting tree was chopped down.  The babies were in urgent need of help. Mother toucan fled the scene, leaving the feather-less youngsters in need of nutrition and care.
