Our Whiskers in Wisconsin

Once upon a time, a young male jaguar roamed the area of Honey Camp lagoon and began to hunt cattle for his dinner.  His misdeeds eventually found him a place in The Belize Zoo’s renowned Problem Jaguar Rehabilitation Program.  Safe and sound at the zoo, the male jaguar, given the name, “Pat the Cat”, calmed down in short time and became a beloved member of the jaguar clan undergoing off-site behavior training.

Moving Forward and Learning from our Past

For 2013, as we enter the New Year, The Belize Zoo is proud to share with our guests the SHED walkway.  This pink-graveled path now allows fun zoo visits from people who are bound to wheelchairs or walkers.  Strollers can easily be pushed along the pathways, too.   The SHED pathway has received  rave reviews.  Before Easter time, it is our goal to see that this wonderful pink-pathway winds completely  throughout our little animal kingdom.

New York, Zoo York!

As the Fall season brought changes in colors and hues to the foliage in the U.S, exciting changes happening at “the Best Little Zoo in the World” were shared with the folks of Central New York. Caledonia Turns On to Jaguars!

In  late August, a sad event occurred in the Corozal District town of Caledonia.   A healthy male jaguar was shot and then skinned.  Horrifically, it was shown on the news and many people voiced harsh objection to this unfortunate and unnecessary action.

However, in September, Belize Zoo Education Officers, Jamal Andrewin and Celeshia Guy, created a different “Jumpin Jaguar” atmosphere in this placid northern village.   Warmly welcomed by principal Augusto Olivarez, they met and gave fun presentations to over 300 students.
