April the Tapir turns 30!

alt And what a celebration it was! Over 250 people came to the zoo and big smiles were seen everywhere. Environmental Educator Jamal Andrewin led the way, and proudly introduced our brand new tapir poster and also, another delightful tapir-friendly broadcast: A bumper sticker to commemorate April’s 30th birthday. However, this sticker also carries with it an important story.

The Lucky Boy Transformation

OK! It is “True Confessions” time. At The Belize Zoo, when we received our emaciated rescued black jaguar in mid July, we thought that it was doubtful that the boy could be saved. The great team of Zoo and Belize Forest Department officials removed him from the abandoned resort and brought him safely to the Zoo, but he was so, SO fragile and hurting. However, the overall and very vocal opinion from all at the zoo simply stated: “Let’s give this animal our 100 percent!” And we did…

30 Years Old and Soaring!

The Belize Zoo has been a part of the nation’s profile for thirty years now. And, to celebrate this important time, a special event was held on the 12th day, of the 12th month of 2012. And of course, it began at 12 noon!

Sign of the Times

Belize Zoo entrance 1983 A fun coincidence occurred at The Best Little Zoo in the World. Thirty years to the very day when a small wooden sign was placed in the backyard of filmmaker Richard Foster’s property, reading “The Belize Zoo” another sign, stating the same, was erected at the current zoo entrance.

Kids Helping Kids with Cancer

Having learned about Miss Salima Barrow’s efforts to raise funds aimed at helping children afflicted with cancer, The Belize Zoo wanted very much to extend her heroic efforts, by offering strong zoo participation.
